My fellow Wisconsin Democrats On Wednesday, we witnessed a horrific tragedy unfold in our neighboring state of Minnesota. At the hands of ICE, Renee Nicole Good was executed. An American citizen was killed by an agency that claims to bring “law and order” to our cities, and now a family is grieving their mother, their wife, and their daughter. While Trump, Derrick Van Orden, and the right-wing media circus would have you believe Renee was a domestic terrorist, we all know what we saw with our own eyes: Renee Nicole Good would be alive today if Trump had not directed ICE to act with zero regard for the law and to incite violence in our communities. ICE operations have become part of Trump’s chaos campaign to distract the American public from his disastrous economic agenda — and now someone is dead because of it. Health care, groceries, rent — they’re all becoming more and more expensive because of Trump and the GOP’s billionaire-focused economic policies that are punishing working people. And so it’s no surprise that as the American people continue to turn on the Republican Party, Trump and his cohorts are desperately trying to do whatever they can to distract you. After the GOP refused to continue ACA funding and a flurry of Wisconsinites were already seeing their premiums go up, the House passed a bill to restore funding for three years. We know that the GOP is on defense on this issue because even Van Orden broke ranks and voted for the legislation. But we know this is an election-year gimmick — he already let ACA funding expire, which is hurting Wisconsinites, and states on his campaign website that repealing the ACA is still a goal. Don’t fall for the gimmick. As things get worse and worse for the GOP, we’re going to see more election theatrics like this, and we’re going to see their party try to sow even more chaos. If we want to win in November and put a wall up between Wisconsin and the Trump administration, we must stay focused on the economic crisis the GOP has unleashed on us. It’s going to be tough, and Trump will likely make things worse before they get better. We must stand together, in solidarity with our communities, and never back down. With gratitude, Devin Remiker |
